Synopsis from Goodreads:

F. C. Yee’s The Rise of Kyoshi delves into the story of Kyoshi, the Earth Kingdom–born Avatar. The longest-living Avatar in this beloved world’s history, Kyoshi established the brave and respected Kyoshi Warriors, but also founded the secretive Dai Li, which led to the corruption, decline, and fall of her own nation. The first of two novels based on Kyoshi, The Rise of Kyoshi maps her journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice who is still feared and admired centuries after she became the Avatar.

My Thoughts:

I just have to quickly say thank you to my mom for remembering how much I love this series and buying me this book along with some of the funkos. Especially because I did not know about this book at all.

Avatar the Last Airbender is still one of my all time favorite tv series. Kyoshi was one of my favorite past Avatars from the moment they introduced us to Kyoshi Island and I wanted to know everything that I possibly could about her.

This started with how the companions of the previous Avatar conducted the search for the next incarnation. They had a very brief interaction with Kyoshi while she was living on the streets before she was taken on to basically clean up after the guy they picked as the Avatar.

It was nice knowing that she was not immediately excepted as the Avatar and she had to fight to prove herself. I liked seeing that she had a VERY humble beginning and that was what drove her to always protect her people. She had a very different beginning then Aang and Korra. This book also showed that not all past Avatars were great or honorable because Kuruk was noted for being terrible so many different times.

This book proved how much of a badass she was and that is why she will continue to be my absolute favorite. Let me tell you, this holds very true to the series. I could see this as a part of the show easily. It would have been a really good flashback episode.

If you were a fan of either series, you need to get this book. I think everyone should get this book in general. I’m so excited for the second book which I believe is coming out at some point next year especially because they left me on this huge cliffhanger.

Have you read it? If so, what were your thoughts?

What books are you trying to read this month? Any recommendations?
